ADA/CBC Hall Station Heights:

We have seen several projects where the wrong code is being communicated and we want to set the record straight! CBC (California Building Code) uses 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design code regarding the hall station heights. The short answer is that the elevator hall stations can be between 15” and 48” measured above finish floor to the centerline of the top operable button.

Curious about CA elevator code? Title 8 refers to the elevator code in California, which is based on ASME A17.1-2004. There are currently four “groups” of code that apply to different installations based on year of installation or alteration. Click the link below for more information. Need help understanding it? California Customers:

CBC (California Building Code) has an accessibility code section and as part of that, there is specific language around Destination-Oriented Elevators (i.e. destination dispatching). A key code item to be considered when integrating your elevator system with your access control system is Section 11B-411.2.1.7.3 which requires the kiosk to verbally say where the user needs to present their access control credentials.

What is a QEI?

A QEI is a Qualified Elevator Inspector. Individuals who hold this designation have gone through a rigorous background check and examination process, and has had at least four years experience in the mechanical/electrical aspects of the elevator industry. They must maintain these qualifications based on the ASME QEI-1 Standard for Qualified Elevator Inspectors.

Emergency Communication Devices:

The 2019 CBC (California Building Code) and ASME A17.1-2019 are based off of 2018 IBC (International Building Code) Section 3001.2 which requires a 2-way video, voice, and text emergency communication device where emergency personnel can see inside the elevator and communicate via “yes” and “no” questions. You can see examples from leading providers such as RATH, MAD Elevator, Kings III, KONE, Schindler, and more.
